The Chemin Neuf Community was founded in 1973 by a group of single people but very soon afterwards they were joined by some couples.
In a way, you could say that Cana started with the arrival of these couples.
In 1975, with several other couples of their acquaintance, they expressed the wish for a retreat centred on marriage and family life, and such a retreat took place in La Baume Sainte Marie in France, and as a result, Laurent Fabre, the founder of the Community felt it right to go further in this direction.
There was a synod on The Family in Rome in 1980, which was no doubt a determining moment: the Community, feeling much concerned about this matter, decided to send four people, simply to be there, to be close to the bishops and to pray for their meeting.
Some months later, the first Cana Session took place in Les Pothières, the Community's Training Centre.
For the past 30 years the Chemin Neuf Community has been running Cana Sessions in many countries throughout the world.
